Christmas Wreath Program

Dear Friends of St. John / St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery,

We are pleased to be having our annual Christmas wreath decoration program for the cemetery. With your participation in this program you will not only be able to beautify the graves of your loved ones during the winter months, but also assist the cemetery in a very special way.

The Holy Innocents Center in East Chicago has been established by the Carmelite Sisters to provide emergency care for the children that have been adandoned or need emergency shelter due to parental problems such as; drug addition, little or no income, abuse, etc. We have decided to answer the call of God by assisting the sisters in their mission by donating the entire proceeds (profits) from the sales of the Christmas decorations to the shelter.

With your purchase of each wreath, you will not only be honoring the memory of your loved ones, but you will also receive the added benefit of helping the little ones who are in urgent need of special attention. What better way is there to celebrate the birthday of Our Lord Jesus Christ than by giving a gift of love to those who cannot help themselves? If you would like any additional information, please call 219-844-9475, or feel free to stop by the cemetery office where the Christmas wreaths will be on display.

Yours in Him,
Rev. Roy T. Beeching
Director of Cemeteries

Saint Joseph cemetery was established by Reverend Henry Plaster, Pastor of St. Joseph Parish in Hammond. The date is thought to be about August 11, 1881. St Joseph Cemetery was located at the corner of 165th street and Hohman ave. Mr. John Verhoven donated one acre of land to be used as a cemetery. In 1886 an additional three acres was added to the cemetery. 3

St. Stanislaus Cemetery was developed by St. Stanislaus Church as a parish cemetery. The first burial was recorded in 1898. For many years there was no general maintenance provided. The ground became very unsightly and was referred to as a “sandbur patch.” 2

Ss Peter and Paul Parish can trace their history back 173 years when the first Mass was celebrated in a log cabin in Turkey Creek (Merrillville) 1841. The settlement of German immigrants occasionally had a visiting priest to say Mass for them. 1
